This week we are bringing you another high-end stero camera from eYs3d, a single-channel LoRa gateway that has moved up from SparkX to full production, and the new Arduino Uno WiFi. Each of these new products have very specific purposes, so let’s take a closer look at each!
The eAP87606A Stereo Camera from eYs3D is a high-end imager controller and patterned IR illuminator, with a global shutter capable of both color and depth-map video modes. Thanks to its dual cameras, this stereo camera is ideally used in applications involving VR/AR, people and thing counting, and obstacle avoidance. The best part about this module is the fact that it has been designed to be as straight forward and easy-to-use as possible for a stereo camera. Simply plug in the included USB 3.0 cable, download the required files and start seeing things through the eyes of your new camera!
The SparkFun 1-Channel LoRa Gateway is a powerful, three network-capable device, thanks to an on-board ESP32 WROOM module and a RFM95W LoRa modem. The RFM95W handles the 915MHz band, while the ESP32 takes care of Bluetooth and WiFi capabilities. One of the ideal uses is to convert LoRa (Long Range) radio messages into data packets that you can access via the web, but of course the flexibility it offers can be put to many more uses! It’s a perfect, low-cost tool for monitoring a dozen or so LoRa devices and relaying their messages to the cloud.
Last up this week is the Arduino Uno WiFi R2. Add this board to a device and you’ll be able to connect it to a WiFi network using its secure ECC608 crypto chip accelerator. The Arduino Uno WiFi is functionally the same as the Arduino Uno Rev3, but with the addition of WiFi and some other enhancements. It incorporates a brand new 8-bit microprocessor from Microchip and has an onboard IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit).

Spacety is one of China’s first commercial and private satellite companies in China, established in January 2016, following new government policies introduced in 2014 and 2015 to deregulate the nation’s space sector. The company — based in Changsa, the capital of Hunan province — engages in scientific research, provides comprehensive solutions for microsatellites and has been backed by major investors in China. Spacety has seen its satellites fly on four separate missions, with two more launches possible this year.
Yang Feng, founder and CEO of Spacety, spoke to SpaceNews correspondent Andrew Jones ahead of the Oct. 29 Long March 2C launch of four of the company’s satellites alongside the China-France Oceanography Satellite.
You started out early after China’s opening of the space sector. What opportunities did you see when founding Spacety?
Our team began to consider building this company around 2013. We started to plan for this company because we saw that SpaceX and Planet were totally different from Boeing and Lockheed Martin. When the government decided to allow space startup companies, right then our team quit our jobs and then we went to Changsha and started Spacety.
Where does your investment come from? Is it a mix of public and private?
Our money comes partly from the founders, like me and my partners, and then we raised money from venture capital firms like Legend Capital, K2VC, SAIF Partners China, Matrix Partners China, Northern Light, Cash Capital and Legend Star. All of them are famous and commercial international venture capitalists in China. We also receive some support from Changsha city, as the rent for our office is free.
What customers and partners do you have right now?
We have cooperation with Laserfleet, another startup, who want to build a laser communications constellation in the future. They want to do the payloads and market operations, leaving the satellite platform, launch and operations to us. Tsinghua, the top university in China, is working with us right now on the detection of the electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational waves and gamma-ray bursts. We have five or six customers at institutes under the Chinese Academy of Sciences right now, doing different kinds of experiments, such as microgravity science research in cooperation with SpacePharma on a satellite launched in February 2017.
You provide microsatellite services, but do you have constellation plans of your own?
We definitely want to have constellation plans in the future, but right now we do not have specific ideas about the kind of constellations we would like to build. Right now, our business model is providing services to scientists in universities, research institutions and commercial companies who want to do scientific research and technology demonstrations in space. If they have an idea or a payload for experiments in space, they just talk to us and we design and build the satellite, find the launch opportunity and do all the documentation and then we launch it and carry out the control and operations. So, we provide one-stop solutions for all our customers. That’s our basic business model right now.
Could you describe the satellite platforms that you are offering and developing and their output?
Right now, we provide a 6U cubesat platform and we are developing a new, bigger 50-kilogram platform for next year. For 2018 ,we manufactured 10 6U cubesats and plan to build 30 in 2019 and 100 in 2020.
How do choose the launches for your satellites?
In China, we have many choices. Like China Great Wall Industry Corp. is one option, a Long March 11 is another choice, and a company named Expace, which has the Kuaizhou-1A and Kuaizhou-11 launchers. The price of a Long March rocket is OK, with many launch opportunities, and the prices in China are OK. There are also so many commercial rockets upcoming, so I think the launch market for us, for satellite companies, will be better and better, because lots of players are rising and the price will definitely come down.
What is Spacety’s role in the Chinese market is and what are the future possibilities?
We find the gap between the giant players, the state-owned space companies. We look at what they do and avoid it. What they don’t do, we do. So, we are trying to fill the gap; we don’t want to compete with them. It’s too hard to compete.
We won’t do traditional government contracts as that takes a long time to do the documentation, to do all the analysis and all the tests. But in the new way of government contracts in which the government pays for the service, invests and receives the data, this kind of contract we can do.
What opportunities do you see for working with international clients, despite export-control regimes and other factors?
On the first day of Spacety, I wanted to be an international, commercial company. We went to all the meetings in other countries to introduce ourselves, because I think the manufacturing costs in China are very low and we can provide the most cost-effective way. We want to find all the partners in the world that can cooperate with us, and I think there’s maybe a way to get China and America working together, because though I don’t know what’s wrong between the big players in the two countries, but for the commercial aerospace industry — especially in science research — there’s no reason we can’t cooperate.
What challenges have Spacety gone through since being established?
The one big lesson is that, even though cubesats are so small, we have had many problems that we never imagined. Our team participated in many space projects before, so at the beginning of the company we thought, “OK, cubesats are so easy.” We have been through lots of huge projects and hard projects so that cubesats seem like a toy. But when we created the startup company we found out that cubesats are a different story than what we imagined. When doing large projects, we had many resources in terms of money, people and time so that we can make things as reliable as possible. But when we started to [work with cubesats] everything was so short, in terms of money, time and people—short of everything—and when we are trying to keep costs down and the reliability at the same level, it turns out it’s impossible. Our company began in January 2016 and we finished our first angel-investor round that July but still managed by November to launch out first satellite. We only used a short time frame to conquer a lot of problems that we never imagined. If you are trying to build a satellite so cheap and so fast, it’s totally different from space projects we did before.
What will be the big challenges for the future?
Cost. For the commercial aerospace industry, if we don’t cut the costs down to around 10 percent of before, or even 1 percent of before, there’s no chance there will be a commercial success. For example, the Iridium constellation is very successful from the aerospace point of view, but from the commercial point of view is a disaster because the cost is so high. If the cost of an Iridium is 1 percent of the total cost it will be a very successful commercial project.
If my friends in technology say they’ve cut 20 percent of costs, then they want to celebrate. I tell them, for me, that’s nothing. SpaceX is a very successful company because they cut the costs to like 10 percent of before, right? I want to get the costs to very, very low. I like SpaceX and Planet a lot because their costs are much lower than the other players and that’s why they are commercially successful.
AMSTERDAM- Market analyst firm, Berg Insight, has recognized TomTom Telematics as the largest provider of fleet management solutions in Europe for the fourth successive year.
The 13th edition of Berg Insight’s Fleet Management in Europereport estimates that the overall market penetration of fleet management systems in active use will double over the coming five years, from 15% in 2017 to 28.8% by 2022.

FORT GORDON, Ga.- MacAulay-Brown, Inc. (MacB), an Alion company, announced today that it has partnered with BAE Systems, Inc. on a U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) contract for the 116th Military Intelligence (MI) Brigade. The 116th MI Brigade is an INSCOM major subordinate command responsible for Aerial-Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (A-ISR) missions for deployed task forces Outside Continental United States (OCONUS). MacB’s total contract value is $26 million over a four-year period. Most of the work will be performed at Fort Gordon, Georgia.
INSCOM executes mission command of operational intelligence and security forces; conducts and synchronizes worldwide multi-discipline and all-source intelligence and security operations; delivers linguist support and intelligence-related advanced skills training, acquisition support, logistics, communications, and other specialized capabilities in support of Army, Joint, and Coalition Commands and the U.S. Intelligence Community.
MacB’s National Security Group (NSG) will work with BAE Systems to provide services for A-ISR Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination (PED) operations for INSCOM. Responsibilities will include Signals Intelligence (SIGINT), Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT), multi-discipline analysis and sensor operations for A-ISR systems, real-time observation, exploitation, analysis and reporting of intelligence.

The leaders in intelligent mine scheduling optimisation have pushed the benchmark even higher with the recent release of Maptek Evolution 5.1.
Close collaboration with mining experts to provide targeted applications has defined the development journey of Evolution. The computational power of the software is unparalleled in the scheduling arena and is underpinned by a drive to provide innovative solutions to current and prospective scheduling problems.
The latest release features updates to Evolution Strategy and Origin modules to enhance medium, long term and strategic life of mine scheduling, reducing operating costs and maximising deposit value.
The ground-breaking multi-objective optimisation algorithm introduced into Evolution Origin for scheduling with blocks has been expanded to handle scheduling with solids. Users can now optimise with solids on NPV and blending, comparing multiple conflicting objectives to define a range of practical solutions for consideration.
‘Before, we had Origin solids as a single object optimisation but now we’ve added multi-objective optimisation. So, what was possible with blocks is now possible with solids. This allows our users to create life of mine to medium term schedules based on a pre-defined cutoff grade. Our holistic approach includes haulage and waste dump for optimisation, plus blending and NPV,’ said Evolution Product Manager, Eduardo Coloma.
Among the upgrades to Origin, when indications suggest the blend grade can be improved at any particular point, the software will step back and redirect material using replay functionality.
Targeted improvements for coal customers include greater flexibility around dependencies, functionality to add multiple dragline excavators and enhanced haulage configuration.
The Strategy module also boasts many enhancements. The seeding function, a popular feature from Origin, has been incorporated into Strategy on customer request. The simple and intuitive interface allows users to select previous results, replicate the sequence of some periods and optimise further periods, providing greater flexibility and control. Multiple solutions can be compared in the pivot tables, providing an easy way to assess the outcomes.
Providing multiple waste dump options in Evolution Strategy delivers more detail about where material is going. A simple workflow allows as many waste dumps as needed to be added, with options to consider associated haulage costs, define the incremental capacity and costs and indicate the most cost-effective strategy.
Reporting has never been quicker or easier. With Evolution 5.1, users now can customise period naming. Further enhancements to pivot table functionality include the ability to filter all available fields, and the option to pivot against waste dumps.
Integration between Maptek Vulcan and Evolution streamlines critical mine planning activities. Road haulage networks generated in Vulcan can be dragged and dropped into Evolution. Scheduling attributes can be loaded onto Vulcan triangulations for further analysis. Users can create a Vulcan block model in Evolution to take advantage of the Schedule Progress option in Vulcan.
‘Our next major milestone on the horizon is Evolution 6,’ concluded Coloma. ‘We’re excited about the future. Considering multiple activities during scheduling, more versatile Gantt charting, reserving “on the fly” and greater flexibility around mining rules headline the development roadmap as Evolution expands into short term scheduling.’
Simulyze, Inc., a leading provider of operational intelligence (OI) technology and applications that empower both federal and commercial organizations, announced it has completed its deployment of its Mission InsightTM (OI) application during NASA’s Technical Capability Level 3 (TCL 3) National Campaign testing of its UAS traffic management (UTM) research platform. Simulyze is continuing to advance its Mission Insight platform to support UTM as it participates with NASA in its TCL 4 development program. Simulyze also announced that it will serve as a UAS Service Supplier (USS) for two Integration Pilot Program (IPP) projects awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
NASA’s Technical Capability Level tests are advancing research of prototype technologies for a national UTM system that could develop airspace integration requirements for enabling safe, efficient low-altitude operations by drones. The TCL 3 National Campaign, held from March-June 2018, focused on testing technologies that maintain safe spacing between cooperative and non-cooperative UAS over moderately populated areas. TCL 4 will be held in April-May 2019. FAA’s UAS test sites are in the process of developing proposals for TCL 4 while NASA is conducting UAS Service Supplier (USS) spiral development simulation exercises to support the TCL 4 exercise. Simulyze is one of the eight remaining USS vendors able to support TCL 4.
FAA’s IPP is a first-of-its-kind program that has approved state, local, and tribal governments to conduct complex drone operations in 10 locations nationwide as part of an effort to expand commercial UAS operations and help the FAA determine how to safely integrate drones into the U.S. airspace.
Simulyze’s Mission Insight enterprise-level solution processes and analyzes large streams of data from disparate sources and integrates and visualizes all aspects of multiple flight operations in a single, customized graphical interface. It ultimately provides UAS operators with situational awareness and a common operating picture for safe and efficient drone operations.

NASA Technical Capability Level 3
During TCL 3, the Alaska Center for UAS Integration (ACUASI), the lead organization for the Pan-Pacific UAS Test Range Complex, in Fairbanks, Alaska and the Northern Plains UAS Test Site (NPUASTS) in Grand Forks, North Dakota used Simulyze’s Mission Insight application as a traffic management system and workflow tool to submit flight plans, monitor aircraft status and telemetry, activate flights, transmit aircraft position data to NASA’s UTM research platform and monitor other surveillance information.
Simulyze will continue to support the FAA’s UAS test sites in NASA’s TCL 4 exercise and the pending FAA UTM Pilot Program. Simulyze has a Space Act Agreement with NASA in support of its UTM that runs through December 2019. The company’s partnership with NASA’s Ames Research Center is focused on the research and development of a UTM system to enable and support safe and effective UAS operations.
FAA Integrated Pilot Program
The FAA’s IPP will help the USDOT and the FAA tackle the most significant challenges in integrating drones into the NAS while reducing risks to public safety and security, and will contribute to new rules that allow more complex low-altitude operations. The ten pilot projects announced in May 2018 will evaluate a host of operational concepts, including night operations, flights over people and beyond the pilot’s line of sight, package delivery, detect-and-avoid technologies and the reliability and security of data links between pilot and aircraft. Fields that could see immediate opportunities from the program include commerce, photography, emergency management, agricultural support and infrastructure inspections.
Competing with 200 businesses that submitted a total of 149 IPP project applications of which 10 were selected by the FAA, Simulyze was chosen to serve as a UAS Service Supplier for two awarded proposals:
North Dakota Department of Transportation, Bismarck, N.D.: This test project will include a wide variety of diverse operations that incorporate advanced technologies that seek to expand UAS operations at night and beyond visual line of sight. Operations will be in multiple types of airspaces ranging from rural to urban areas and will explore applications relating to linear infrastructure inspections, crop health monitoring, media reporting and emergency response.
University of Alaska-Fairbanks, Fairbanks, Alaska: This test project will use enabling technologies that include collision avoidance, detect and avoid day and night, ADS-B, differential GPS, satellite services, infrared imaging and UTM. Operations will primarily focus on pipeline inspection and surveying in remote areas and harsh climatic conditions.
The IPP projects are underway and will be completed by September 2020.

Friedrichshafen/Bremen, 16 November 2018 – The astronaut assistant, CIMON* (Crew Interactive Mobile CompanioN), developed and built by Airbus on behalf of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), has passed its first tests in space with flying colours. It worked together with German ESA astronaut, Alexander Gerst, in the Columbus module of the International Space Station (ISS) for around 90 minutes.
Gerst has been living and working on the ISS since 8 June 2018. His current horizons mission, lasting six months, includes conducting a series of tests with CIMON. This medicine-ball-sized plastic sphere, which weighs five kilogrammes, was created using 3D printing and is the first AI-based astronaut assistant – an experimental technology studying human-machine interaction in space.
At 11:40 h CET on 15 November 2018, the German-Swiss CIMON mission team at Lucerne University’s BIOTESC ground control centre in Switzerland waited with bated breath. After two and a half years of intense preparation and countless hours of training, it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop, the air thick with intense concentration and joyful anticipation. Following a software upload to the ISS and a software update for CIMON itself, an audio check and a test of the navigation camera, Alexander Gerst finally came face to ‘face’ with his new artificial roommate, activating it for the very first time. The first ‘meeting’ between the German ESA astronaut and the free-flying robotic crew assistant, a world first, lasted 90 minutes.
CIMON’s autonomous navigation was then tested, seeing the assistant perform several turns and movements in every direction. It was able to search for Gerst’s face and make ‘eye’ contact. As a demonstration of its assistance capabilities, CIMON displayed instructions for a school science experiment on crystallisation and a video of the Rubik’s cube puzzle on its ‘face’, a screen set in the centre of the sphere, and played a piece of music. It then tested its ultrasonic sensors, which have a similar function to a car’s parking sensors, and took a photo and shot a video of Gerst using its integrated cameras. Finally, Gerst returned his crew assistant to its place in the Columbus module.
“CIMON represents the realisation of an Airbus vision. It is a huge step forward for human space flight, achieved by working in cooperation with our partners. With CIMON, we have laid the foundations for social assistance systems that are designed to be used under extreme conditions,” said Till Eisenberg, CIMON Project Manager at Airbus.
“It is an incredible feeling and absolutely fantastic to be able to experience CIMON actually seeing, hearing, understanding and speaking. This first, real deployment in space has made aerospace history, and marks the start of what will hopefully be a long deployment on the ISS,” said Dr Christian Karrasch, CIMON Project Manager at the DLR Space Agency. “I am fascinated by interactions with artificial intelligence. The CIMON system is the only one of its kind, and was designed specifically for deployment on the International Space Station. We are entering uncharted territory and pushing the boundaries of technological expertise in Germany.”
CIMON uses the Wi-Fi on the ISS to transmit data, making use of satellite connections to ground stations to establish an internet connection with the IBM Cloud. Matthias Biniok, IBM project lead, explained the processes that then take place in CIMON’s ‘brain’: “If CIMON is asked a question or addressed, the Watson AI firstly converts this audio signal into text, which is understood, or interpreted, by the AI. IBM Watson not only understands content in context, it can also understand the intention behind it. The result is a tailored answer, which is converted into speech and then sent back to the ISS, enabling a natural, dynamic spoken dialogue.”
Bernd Rattenbacher, team leader at the ground control centre at Lucerne University, said: “The data link to Earth is established via satellite to NASA/ESA and to the DLR’s Columbus control centre in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. From there, the signal is transmitted to us, the CIMON ground station at BIOTESC in Lucerne, the Swiss User Support and Operations Center, which is connected to the IBM Cloud in Frankfurt over the internet. The time needed for the signal to be transmitted via satellite is 0.4 seconds each way. A number of firewalls and VPN tunnels are in place to ensure data security.”
CIMON also has a scientific background: its advisors are Dr Judith-Irina Buchheim and Professor Alexander Choukèr from the Department of Anaesthesiology at the Ludwig-Maximilian University Hospital in Munich. Buchheim said: “As a partner and assistant, CIMON could support astronauts with their high workload of experiments and maintenance and repair work, thereby reducing their exposure to stress.”

Scientific discoveries resulting from space exploration have created new industries and technologies. These technological advancements of commercial space activities have also created profitable business opportunities. To support those efforts, MBDA has provided funding for innovative projects to promote and enhance minority business owners operating in space commercialization industries.

The Product Owner role is implemented in organizations in various different ways. The responsibilities and authorities of Product Owners vary across organizations, departments, teams, and Product Owners. This can be explained to some extent, because it is a role that people need to grow into. The role requires some specific competencies and a specific mindset. In addition, for many organizations, it is a new and unknown role in which people (typically management) are trying to find the right balance of responsibilities and mandate. Preferably, a Product Owner has a lot of mandate and he or she is the final decision maker for the product. In many organizations, this is not (yet) the case, however.
In order to create clarity about the level of Product Ownership in your organization, we distinguish five types of Product Owners:

The first step would be to take it easy. Being a sole tester of a company is without a doubt a big responsibility, but panicking won’t help here. Your job is to lead the testing process of the company, it doesn’t mean you should be the one that performs all the necessary tests. Therefore, not every bug that would be found after releasing the product is your responsibility.
Figure out what testing is, what does quality mean, what should the testing process provide. Take notice of the process that has been done beforehand.
Be assertive regarding your decisions. Come to a conclusion about what is the right process for you, get it documented and communicate it for the rest of your team.
When you start working as a tester in a company, you should understand the existing system. As the new part of the team, you should understand what is expected of you in relation to the team. Every team is different, therefore your role should be performed differently in relation to your situation.
As the professional tester of your team, it is your challenge to define what modern testing is and communicate it to the rest of the organization.
Communication and visibility are very important. Don’t be afraid to present your workflow and new ideas to the high levels of your organization as well as your other colleagues. The testing process is diverse and constantly changing if you are able to communicate these changes to the high level of the organization, you are on the right track.
When you start working for the new company, ensure quick wins in order the get legitimacy. Create a checklist for the urgent things to be tested and at the same time start working on things with a high level of importance.
Create dashboards and metrics for your team. It would help to point out the problematic areas to your developer team as well as show them your workflow.
Dictate what areas would you be focusing on your testing process to your team, what are you going to test and what are you not. That would help you generate their feedbacks regarding your testing.
Learn about Exploratory Testing, it is a very good technique when you need to cover things quickly.
You are never the only tester. You can always use the developers, support team or other people in your team. You can use outsourcing or other companies in order to test your product.
Work alongside your developers and cooperate with them the all along the process.

SAN FRANCISCO – Avellan Space Technology & Science announced plans Nov. 15 to begin building extremely satellites in 2019 at its new North American manufacturing plant in Midland, Texas.
AST&Science was founded in 2017 by Abel Avellan, who established and led Emerging Market Communications before selling it for $550 million in June 2016 to Global Eagle Entertainment. Avellan then served as Global Eagle president and chief strategy officer until April 2017.
AST&Science plans to invest more than $30 million in a new 7,897-square-meter manufacturing facility at the Space Port Business Park at the Midland International Air and Space Port. There, it will produce annually as many as 100,000 satellites, called Microns, that weigh approximately 200 grams and “are designed to work in concert with larger nanosatellites and microsatellites,” according to a December press release.
AST&Science and its subsidiary AST&Defense have research and development, engineering and manufacturing facilities in Maryland and Europe, as well.
In March, AST&Science announced it acquired a controlling interest in NanoAvionics, a spinoff of Lithuania’s Vilnius University. In July, AST&Science announced Cisneros, a Miami-based investment group, made “a significant investment.” The firm declined to disclose the value of its NanoAvionics investment or of the Cisneros investment.
